As a kid i was scared of hails because i thought they would hit me hard in the head but at the same time i loved playing with them and even eating them. But how does hail form, where does it come from?. During thunderstorms, strong updraft wind currents blow upwards and carry moisture from the clouds upwards.

These moisture are the rain droplets that fall as rain. As the updraft wind carries them higher above the clouds, they freeze because the higher you go the cooler it becomes. These updraft winds can be up to 100mph or even higher. The frozen piece will attract more moisture until it is heavy enough to overcome the updraft and fall down as hail. So the stronger the wind currents the bigger the hail will be. Some large hails can be 6 or more inches in diameter.
