If you have a USB drive that you love so much that you carry it with you everywhere you go, then you can make if more useful by putting some portable software on it. These portable software can be run on any computer from the USB drive without installing anything on the computer. Here are some useful and important software you can try.

Portable Firefox – Take your browser with you with all the saved passwords, bookmarks and extensions. If you don’t like Firefox then there is also portable versions of Chrome and Opera.

Portable GIMP – GIMP is like a free version of Photoshop. You can use it to edit your photos and do some wonders.

Portable Yahoo Messenger – If instant messaging is your thing then don’t leave this behind.

Portable FileZilla – For webmasters, this is a very helpful FTP Client you need to have. There is also a portable version of SmartFTP if you prefer it.

LimeWire Portable – If you would love to have your Limewire wherever you go then get this.

DeepBurner Portable – This is a CD/DVD burning software that might be useful when you want to burn something.

MPlayer Portable – This free open source player plays many formats of videos and audio including CD/DVD, FLV and many more.

ZIP Software – You can use portable versions of Filzip or 7-zip to zip and unzip files when on the go.

Portable Antivirus – There are portable versions of Kaspersky, Avast, and AVG you can use to protect your computer from viruses and spywares

Portable OpenOffice – An alternative to Microsoft Office that is also compatible with Office docs.

Ever wanted to access a certain file on your computer while you are away but couldn’t, well there is Orb 2.0.  Orb is a free program that lets you remotely access files and documents on your computer while you are away. Once you download and install Orb 2.0 or your computer, you can access documents, audio and videos files remotely from a PDA, Laptop, Smartphone, PS3, and any other internet enabled device even the wii. Lets say you are somewhere far away but still on earth and you wanted to watch or listen to music that is on your home PC,  Orb will let you access it then stream it.

If you want to take screenshots of a website, there are different ways in which it can be done. One is the old fashioned way of “print screen” and now there are online tools that can take the shots for you in almost any browser you want. The first one is done by pressing print screen button on your keyboard. This method isn’t the best because it takes the whole computer screen (tabs, taskbar etc) and requires cropping if you need just the browser window. The other method is the easiest and the best way to do it, all you have to do is go to one of the website listed below and put in the website address or URL and you might also have to select what kind of browser you want to take the shots on.  Then take the shots.

Snipshot – This one is very easy to use and a nice looking. You can resize by dragging and it also comes with all the good features.

Drpic – Crop by dragging. Web2.0 looking and has features that you wouldn’t need any other image editor. One of my favs

Webresizer – Nice one that will even optimize your picture and make it clearer

Picresize – Another nice one with a lot of features you can play around with. When you are done, you can save the picture in three formats PNG, JPEG and GIF.

Resizr – You can use an image URL or you can upload an image. There are a lot of options on this one too like quality, sharpen, rotate and more.

Locking keyboard and mouse is something that parents with young kids should know how to do. I happen to have a nephew that sometimes when I’m working on something, he’ll just come and start slapping on the keyboard and that messes everything up for me. Good news, there’s a program called “Toddler Keys” that you can use to lock your keyboard, mouse and CD/DVD drives. The program can also disable your power button so that pushing it wont have any effect on your computer. All you have to do is download it, install it and use it by right clicking its task bar icon then selecting whatever you want lock. It works on both laptops and desktops. So next time don’t worry about your toddler going to random websites or turning off your computer when you are in the middle of something, just sit back and relax.

Google has launched yet another service that you can use to track where your friends are. Google latitude lets you see where your friends are on a map and find out what they are up to by contacting them via SMS, IM or phone call. This service can work on both your phone and your computer. On your phone’s browser you have to go to google.com/latitude and start using it from there. For supported phones go here. Though this has raised security questions, it will be useful for parents who want to keep track of their kids or just someone who is lost and needs guidance.
