10 Useful Portable USB Software

If you have a USB drive that you love so much that you carry it with you everywhere you go, then you can make if more useful by putting some portable software on it. These portable software can be run on any computer from the USB drive without installing anything on the computer. Here are some useful and important software you can try.

Portable Firefox – Take your browser with you with all the saved passwords, bookmarks and extensions. If you don’t like Firefox then there is also portable versions of Chrome and Opera.

Portable GIMP – GIMP is like a free version of Photoshop. You can use it to edit your photos and do some wonders.

Portable Yahoo Messenger – If instant messaging is your thing then don’t leave this behind.

Portable FileZilla – For webmasters, this is a very helpful FTP Client you need to have. There is also a portable version of SmartFTP if you prefer it.

LimeWire Portable – If you would love to have your Limewire wherever you go then get this.

Well, there are several alternatives to expensive virus scanners like McAfee and Norton. One of these is Avast, a slightly pirate themed virus scanner that offers a number of options. You can create custom scanning settings for Microsoft Outlook, your network, peer to peer sharing programs, and instant messaging, and these scanners are always running to ensure your computer is safe. If a virus is detected, a siren sounds and a voice actually tells you the webpage or file is infected. Avast also automatically checks for new updates, and you’ll see it updating a least every other day (and hear it, too—“Virus database has been updated!”). The only thing you have to do to use Avast for free is to request a new license key from their website every year. It’s that simple, and it keeps your computer protected.

Microsoft says IE 8 is Done

Microsoft has been oddly quiet when it comes to Internet Explorer 8. In fact, most of the news has been about Windows 7. However, the company recently announced that they’re done with the new version of their web browser and that it’s available for download at their official website for Windows XP and Vista users. It’s not yet available for the beta version of Windows 7, however, so beta users should steer clear of it for now. According to reports, there’s not much different between the final version and the recent changes to the program made back in January. A few tweaks have been made, but nothing major was changed. IE 8 is set to be bundled with Windows 7 when the final version of the new operating system is launched. However, to keep in compliance with antitrust laws, especially in Europe, the browser will be easy to remove.

Fennec Beta Out on Mobile Phones

It seems like everyone uses their mobile phones to access the internet these days. Every software and computer company, therefore, is expanding to this new market – and that includes Mozilla. Their Firefox browser was a big hit and has challenged Microsoft’s Internet Explorer for dominance in the market. Now Mozilla is expanding to mobile phones: their Fennec mobile internet browser is now available. This limited beta release is so far only available on the Nokia N810, but it’s expected to expand soon. It features tabbed browsing, an integrated search bar, and more. So far, Fennec has been reported to work on Windows Mobile, Nokia, Symbian, and even Google’s Android operating system. No word, though, on if an iPhone version will be available.

Google Chrome 2.0 and Windows 7 Beta Not a Good Match

If you love using Google’s Chrome browser, you may be itching to download the new beta version of Chrome 2.0. However, don’t get too hasty, especially if you’re using Windows 7 Beta or plan to upgrade to Windows 7 when it’s released. So far, users who have the beta versions of both pieces of software haven’t noticed much of the speed increase Google promises Chrome will deliver. They’re also having issues using some of Chrome 2.0’s new features, including the side by side feature that is one of new Chrome’s highlights. The internet browser even crashes under Windows 7. Will the two work out their issues by the time Windows 7 goes live? Well, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Windows 7 to Run Everything?

Microsoft has announced something interesting regarding programs and Windows 7. While everyone has assumed that anything that will run on Vista will run on Windows 7, the opposite may not be true. According to a blog, Microsoft is planning to make Windows 7 compatible with some programs that would not work with Vista. So far, Microsoft has made Windows 7 run about 30 different international applications that Vista would not. These include the German version of QuickTime and a Spanish program from IKEA. So far, no English-language programs have been announced as being saved by Windows 7, but a list of them will most likely be announced before Windows 7 goes live.

Microsoft Stores Around The Corner

Microsoft plans to open its own retail stores just like apple did to help with the company’s slowdown. According to Microsoft’s press release, they will be opening the stores “to create deeper engagement with consumers and continue to learn firsthand about what they want and how they buy.”

Microsoft has appointened David Porter, a former walmart executive, to be the corporate vice president of Retail Stores. This move is similar to what apple did when they opened their own retail stores which was quite a succesful move for them. Now lets just sit and watch how microsoft will do in this.

Windows telephone activation

I recently build a new computer and re-installed windows XP which i bought but since my computer had new hardware, i had to re-activate windows. I tried through online activation but no success. So i got lazy and kept re-installing XP everytime it expired then i finally made a choice yesterday to try telephone activation. It was a lot easier than i thought, took me about 5 minutes. Here’s how i did it.

I went to the activation screen and chose telephone activation then selected my country (USA) and they gave me a number to call. I called the number which was 1(888)571-2048 then the machine answered and the automated lady asked me if i wanted to activate windows, i said yes. She then asked me to read the installation ID in groups of six. The code is found in the activation screen and its about 8 or 9 groups of 6 numbers each. After i read all of the code, she transferred me to a real person because the XP was used before.

Waited about two minutes then an indian guy spoke to me and he asked me which version of windows i was activating then he asked me if i have installed it on another computer before.I said no. He then asked me verify the first six and the last three numbers of the installation ID which i did. Then he gave me the activation code. Easy and takes only five minutes.
