Posted by Civi on April 1, 2009

Microsoft recently named a list of developers who are working on new apps for the Windows Mobile App store, a store designed to rival the iPhone’s apps and the Android Marketplace. The list includes new and free apps for Facebook and MySpace, two popular social networking sites, and more. There are currently over 20,000 apps for Windows Mobile floating around the internet, so it only makes sense to create some sort of central place for them all. Read more… »

Say Goodbye to Encarta

Posted by Civi on April 1, 2009

For quite some time, Microsoft’s Encarta virtual encyclopedia was invaluable to students and those in need of some quick research. In fact, it used to come bundled with every new computer. However, Microsoft has announced that they will be shutting down the Encarta website on October 31, 2009 (except for the Japanese site, whi azh will shut down at the end of the year), and they will no longer be producing either the student or the premium Encarta encyclopedia. Gmail Labs Available in 50 Languages

Posted by Civi on March 31, 2009

Google just gave itself a present: on Gmail’s fifth birthday, Google updated Gmail Labs. Previously only available in English, Google has added 49 other languages. There are many different features in Gmail Labs that regular Gmail does not have, including the ability to “un-send” an email (as long as you click the un-send button within five seconds of sending it). Another feature is the attachment reminder. This feature actually scans your message for words like “attachment.” Read more… »

Posted by Civi on March 27, 2009

Do you spend way too much money on batteries? While rechargeable batteries can alleviate some of this cost, many of us simply forget to plug them into the charger. Plus, it’s always inconvenient to not have fully charged batteries when you need them. Well, with these cool USB rechargeable batteries, that’s not a problem. There’s no charger to keep up with. Simply pop open the top of the battery to reveal the USB connection. Plug it into your computer’s USB charger, and in 5 hours or so, Read more… »

Skype, one of the most popular instant messaging programs, has launched a new version for PDA and smart phones. The 3.0 version, still in beta, allows for users to do two new things: transfer files back and forth and send SMS. Google Maps Street View

Posted by Civi on March 25, 2009

If you haven’t heard of Google Maps and their new street view ability, you’re in for a treat. While the option has been available for several years now, it hasn’t been widely advertised. Basically, street view is almost like the “Holo-deck” that you may have seen on episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. All you do is go to Google Maps and click on the little yellow man icon. Drag him to your destination and suddenly, you have a 360 degree image of it! You can see houses, businesses, and more. Read more… »

Microsoft says IE 8 is Done

Posted by Civi on March 23, 2009

Microsoft has been oddly quiet when it comes to Internet Explorer 8. In fact, most of the news has been about Windows 7. However, the company recently announced that they’re done with the new version of their web browser and that it’s available for download at their official website for Windows XP and Vista users. It’s not yet available for the beta version of Windows 7, however, so beta users should steer clear of it for now. Read more… »

Google Chrome 2.0 and Windows 7 Beta Not a Good Match

Posted by Civi on March 19, 2009

If you love using Google’s Chrome browser, you may be itching to download the new beta version of Chrome 2.0. However, don’t get too hasty, especially if you’re using Windows 7 Beta or plan to upgrade to Windows 7 when it’s released.
